Discover Burnham Market

A Georgian village a mile from the marshes

Burnham Market is one of the seven Burnhams, built around a green of mainly Georgian houses. The coast at Burnham Overy Staithe is five minutes by car, or about 35 minutes on foot.

The village

Independent shops around the green: a delicatessen, a Tuscan farm shop, a wine merchant, a butcher, a greengrocer, a fishmonger and a bakery, with boutiques and galleries in between. The parish church sits just off the green.

The coast

Holkham beach, often counted among the best in the UK, is about ten minutes away. Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea are close by, and from Burnham Overy Staithe a ferry runs out to Scolt Head Island.

Food and drink

The Hoste Arms has both informal and fine dining and a terraced garden for sunny days. Socius serves contemporary small plates, and Twenty9 cooks over an open fire pit.

Walking and outdoors

The Norfolk Coast Path runs from Burnham Overy Staithe towards Holkham and Wells. For birdwatching, try the reserves at Titchwell, Snettisham and Cley-next-the-Sea.

Days out

Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall and the royal estate at Sandringham are all within easy reach. Pensthorpe runs wildlife safaris, and Burnham Thorpe, Nelson's birthplace, is a short drive away.

Sailing and sport

Nelson learnt to sail at Brancaster Staithe, a few minutes up the coast, and the staithes are still busy with dinghies in summer. The village has hard tennis courts, and Norfolk Padel near Fakenham has courts to hire.
